Bethesda

Bethesda is located northwest of Washington, D.C. The community occupies a large area of land that stretches from the Capital Beltway to the District’s boundary line. In the late 17th century, Bethesda was the site of newly granted colonial plantations. Goods were transported down what is today Wisconsin Avenue to Georgetown for their export, a rural theme was played out through much of the 1800s. Bethesda received its name from a Presbyterian meetinghouse in 1871.

Like other communities outside the District, the 1890s were a time of change for Bethesda. The Chevy Chase Land Company, the same firm that had acquired and parceled land in Chevy Chase, D.C. and Maryland, developed a light rail system that coursed into Bethesda. This was a transformative circumstance that led to a boom in population and economic growth. This network substantiated further expansion of the community when the automobile was invented.

Quality of Life:

Bethesda’s progress has been relatively unheeded since the 1900s. Since then, it has evolved into a sensible and modern community that its residents greatly appreciate. Bethesda is a predominantly residential community, although there is a distinctly urban pocket surrounding the Bethesda Metro station.

Bethesda boasts some 20 art galleries, a wide array of globally minded culinary diversions and numerous boutiques.  Opportunities abound for those seeking something more. Strathmore Hall hosts world-class symphonic concerts and there are a variety of local theatres. Local food and art festivals occur on an almost monthly basis.

Bradley Boulevard, Old Georgetown Road and River Road are major traffic arteries. Bethesda is serviced by the Red Line metro at the Bethesda Row Shopping Complex and the Medical Center, as well as by metrobus lines. The Bethesda Circulator provides free service around town.
